Anime Review Dota: Dragon's Blood

Good fantasy always gets a well-deserved response. It seems that the animation market is now more crowded than ever. One issekai is born annually in several new worlds full of magic and game mechanics. The trouble is that by choosing the Lord of the Rings as the standard of high fantasy, the audience is left with nothing – to the extent that the genre has been polluted by its own demand. Perhaps that's why last year's "Tower of God" caused a stir, which struck out the spark of the good old fantasy. And that's why Dota: Dragon's Blood becomes so winning. He literally eliminates the thesis of the need for reform in the genre and proves that the classical approach in the right hands can still be fascinating.

Actually, "Dragon's Blood" does it so coolly, without fear of contaminating the characters with blood, naked bodies, unexpected orgies and beheading the innocent, that fans of the manga "Berserk" once again have to enviously cherish such an imagination. Dota comes to life in a world of insecurity and fear, where the one you saved today can easily betray tomorrow. Where the gods, the mercies he worshipped, reveal a deceitful interior. Where legends designed to bring back the taken lands and dead gods remain just legends. No wonder Mirana, Fimrin, and Davion are so confused. Naivety in these lands kills loved ones, fear leads to self-forgetfulness and feeds evil, and love is nothing but self-interest. Trust in others, already questioned, becomes almost impossible, even if you don't know who you are.

"Dota: Dragon's Blood" goes out of its way to interpret every detail of the world. The characters speak without realizing the presence of the viewer, naturally, as if they are not obliged to explain another new name or rule, because they are not alien to them (only to us). And this is the most important thing – detailed knowledge of the lore is not necessary at all. It is the focus on the effectiveness of the action and dialogues, rather than their clarity, that saves the series from the swampy prospect of explaining what, how, and why. From this follows the language characteristic of the replicas of the heroes and, above all, the dragons, with a pathetic arrogance commensurate with the Smog from "Hobbit".

Naturally, the initial clarity of the types of heroes and the age-related foundation of fantasy attracts to "Dragon's Blood". Familiar formulas have been running through the series for a long time. Take, for example, Davion's storyline, which is so similar to Akira from Devilman that it's generally surprising that this show wasn't called "Dragonman Crybaby" (because the animation still doesn't refuse direct quotes). But, considering all the other qualities of "Dota: Dragon's Blood," the formulaic nature of the story has never been said goodbye so easily. Thus, Studio Mir adds the second successful anime adaptation of the video game to the Netflix catalog (after Castlevania), and we have a lot of hopes for the continuation of the conceived first season – even more beautiful and epic.
